As King Henry II spouse, she wasn't politically involved; her reign as Queen of France was from 1547-1559. When Henry II died in 1559, her political power grew and held sway during the reign of three sons, Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III, all of whom, she out-lived. She was determined to do whatever it took to keep the Valois monarchy on the throne and was considered ruthless. She was in power at the time of the St. Bartholomew's Massacre of 1572 when thousands of Huguenots, French Calvinists Protestants, were killed throughout France by Catholic mobs, for their religious beliefs, 389 pages. 8 x 5.5 inches. c. 1900.
