About This Item

A lovely first printing of the first American edition [Viking New York (1972)], signed by author Iris Murdoch directly on the title page. The book is in near fine condition with a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper but with no remainder marks, a tight and square binding, a bright mustard yellow top stain, with no highlighting and no staining or marking. The dust jacket is also in near fine condition, not price-clipped ($7.95), with some creases but no chips or tears and minimal shelf wear. It is now protected by an archival cover which is easily removable. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.

Synopsis

Of the novelists who have made their bow since the war she seems to me to be the most remarkable' Raymond MortimerThis is the story of the comic and yet relentless struggle for survival of Austin Gibson Grey, the accidental man. Austin is one of those people who needs to survive through the destruction of others. The others, in Austin's case, include his successful elder brother, Matthew, and the women who, one after the other, are so touchingly convinced that they can 'save' him. In this latter role we meet Austin's estranged wife, Dorina, a crazed angel, and Austin's far from angelic alcoholic landlady, Mitzi. Other women interest themselves too in Austin's fate, with hilarious and appalling results. An Accidental Man is a novel of extraordinary scope and variety in which Iris Murdoch's astonishing fertility of mind and unerring narrative skill are most felicitously combined.
