About This Item

Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1794. Cloth. Good. 8.5" by 5". None. Benjamin Rush's scarce work on the 1793 Philadelphia epidemic of yellow fever, the second edition of this first-hand account. The second edition of this scarce work.ESTC citation number W36514, with the same errors in pagination. An important study into the 1794 Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic, being the author's first-hand account. This epidemic was one of the most severe in the history of the United States, killing five-thousand or more people within a few months. At this time the origin of the fever nor how the disease was transmitted was known. This work traces the development of the epidemic, looking into the causes, casualties, and the treatment provided.By the founding father Benjamin Rush. During the epidemic Rush treated patients with bleeding, calomel, and other early treatments that were typically ineffective and tended to hurt the patients more. The ideas on treatment expressed in this work differed much from the more experienced French doctors who dealt with outbreaks in the West Indies every year. Rush had been a doctor's apprentice during the 1762 epidemic of yellow fever in Philadelphia. Otherwise Rush is known for signing the Declaration of Independence.Bound without the half-title. Rebound in a cloth binding by the Birmingham Medical Institute. Externally, front joint is starting. Light discolouration to the spine and extremiites. Minor marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the spine and extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Institutional stamp to the title page. Good
