Xxviii, [3], 489, [10], 539, iv, 5-49 pp. Early ownership signature of George Melvin, corners worn, joints starting, Arabic dates inked on title pages, large folding chart with 2" stub tear, minor toning to plates; otherwise about near fine.Very nice copy of a Dublin edition of Cook's first voyage, detailing his journey to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, and the charting of New Zealand and coast of Australia. This edition includes Phipps Voyage toward the North Pole. Illustrations include a large folding map of the South Seas (one of two maps), and views of the Natives (three folding and two single page) in their natural settings. One folding plate shows facially tattooed New Zealander and a war canoe. A short chart of some local words and English translations is included in the second volume.
