About This Item

London, England: Hurst and Blackett Ltd, 1907. Hardcover. Very Good. Two Volumes: black cloth, thick octavos with titles in gilt to spines and covers. Corners bumped, some light spotting to covers and spines, textblocks square, bindings tight. Volume 1: xv, 396pp+4 page Hurst catalogue. Large foldout map at rear, 67 illustrations. Volume 2: xii, 511pp+1 page publisher advert. Index, 99 illustrations.

NOTE: Lacks route map to volume 2. Inscribed and signed on endpaper to volume 1 by Landor: To "Dr. C.M. Sneed with kindest regards, Henry Savage Landor, London, Sept. 19th , 1913." The front pastedown to both volumes have the signature of C.M. Sneed in pencil.

Two short handwritten letters in original postmarked stamped envelopes from Landor to C.M. Sneed written on Savoy Hotel stationary and posted from London on January and February 1924, laid in. Some browning to endpapers, light overall toning to pages, no marks, etc. The journey covered 8,500 miles. Arnold Henry Savage Landor [1865-1924] was a painter, explorer, writer, and anthropologist.
He traveled the world including Russia, India, Tibet, Africa and South America, and was known for his entertaining writing style. Note: Have not been able to glean much if any information on Dr. Sneed, other than he and his later family lived in Columbia, Missouri. But somewhere along the line he became friends with Landor, and the letter in hand states that Landor was expecting to meet him in London in 1924 as Snead was in Italy [Trieste] at that time, as the letter is posted to him there. Landor died in Florence in 1924.
