About This Item

London: Heinemann, 1953. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Publisher's blue boards with gilt spine lettering. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION. Illustrated text of the Rockefeller Foundation Lectures delivered by Redgrave at the University of Bristol in 1952/53, examining how he approached his parts and his views on his craft and the theatre. Book is VG. Clean and tight, slight lean, pages gently age-toned. Spine sunned, a little worn to head and tail. Boards a little grubby from handling. Crease (not affecting main part of image) to the frontispiece page bearing a photo of Redgrave as King Lear from the 1953 RSC production at Stratford. Inscribed in ink to FFEP "To John Goodwin / Stratford 1953 / affectionately / Michael R". Goodwin was the longstanding chief publicist at the RSC (1960-73) and the National Theatre (1973-88). From 1948-56 he represented the annual Shakespeare season at Stratford. In 1953 Redgrave played the title role in King Lear, during which run it is likely he signed this book for Goodwin. The D/W is about VG with a chip to the base of the lower panel (not affecting any lettering), which is also lightly soiled; a little loss to the head and tail of the spine; some wear to extremities; and a small (3mm) hole along the rear hinge. Better, perhaps, than it might sound. Photographs/scans available upon request.
