Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1859. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Bound with cream vellum over the spine and corners, bloue cloth over the boards, gilt title on blue leather title plate on the spine. The vellum is a little darkened and there is a closed split to half way up the spine edge but remains attractive, robust and square. Hinge firm, marbled end papers, ex libris sticker inside the front and an address stamp to the front free end paper. Closed page edges browned but internally pages smooth clean and bright.
Synopsis
Adam Bede, the first novel written by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), was published in 1859. It was published pseudonymously, even though Evans was a well-published and highly respected scholar of her time. The novel has remained in print ever since, and is used in university studies of 19th century English literature.
