Rare address by Dr. Chapin A. Harris (1806-1860)-the "Father of American Dental Science"-to the American Society of Dental Surgeons. Founded in 1840, the ASDS was the first national dental organization in the United States. Chapin was its president in 1844. Chapin authored the standard 19th century dental text, Principles and Practice of Dental Surgery. He was the second president of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the oldest continuously-active dental school in America and he second oldest in America. Chapin also edited the first dental journal, the American Journal of Dental Science.
