Statesman Adlai Ewing Stevenson, b.1900-d.1965, of Libertyville, Illinois, toward the end of his life, had been Governor in 1948 after involvement in his state's politics since 1930. In 1952, his bid for the Presidency failed. Many lauded him as a campaigner of high intellect and class. Other election bids also failed. Touring internationally, writing and speaking followed. He continued to be a national personality, building his base, while becoming more involved in foreign affairs. His leadership was strong in the developing eras of John F Kennedy's New Frontier and Lyndon Baines Johnson's Great Society, and as Ambassador to the United Nations. Posthumously, the Adlai Stevenson Institute of International Affairs in Chicago's Robie House became a research organization for fellowship recipients with links to a consortium of colleges, in recent years under the University of Chicago umbrella.
