About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Buffalo Bill is definitely one of the most colorful and most interesting characters of the Wild West. A scout, a soldier, a hunter, an innovator, a resourceful and successful businessman and a talented writer, Colonel William F. Cody illustrates his life story in ten compelling chapters in this exciting book. The first four chapters provide detailed accounts of some of his most formidable adventures, while the last six are more personal, more autobiographical.

Cody was born in Iowa, in 1846. The family moved to Ontario when Cody was only one year old, and then they moved to Kansas Territory in 1853. Cody?s father was known around Kansas for his antislavery opinions that he voiced in public speeches. The speeches angered pro-slavery crowds and old Cody was seriously injured in a fight, injury that he never fully recovered from. He had to spend time away from his family to protect his wife and son against prosecution. He could return later, but he became ill on his way home and died, leaving his family struggling with financial problems.

Though only 11 at the time, young Cody took a job as a boy extra with a freight carrier. When he was 14, he went to search for gold in Colorado, then he enlisted in the Union Army in 1863, where he was distinguished with several medals and honors for his bravery. It was during the Civil War that he received his nickname ? he had a contract with Kansas Pacific Railroad to supply workers with meat and he killed over four thousand bison to honor the contract. He rose to nationwide and international fame after Ned Buntline wrote a novel about his adventures in 1869.

He soon established a business of his own, a touring show entitled Buffalo Bill?s Wild West that he took to Europe and Britain as well. The success of the show brought Cody a fortune, allowing Cody to buy a 4,000-acre plot of land in Nebraska.
