About This Item

Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, 1958. This early trade printing (with a notice on the dust jacket front panel that this is a Pulitzer Prize-winning book) is in Fine condition, with a Very Good+ dust jacket with its original price intact. Over the years, this book has become a classic of Beltway double-dealing, intrigue, power-hunger, and blackmail, in which a conservative, married senator is threatened to be outed over his gay past, prophetically showing how political gay-baiting hasn't changed much over the last half-century. The book was made into a powerful 1962 movie. The book is bound in gray cloth covers with die-stamped blue and red spine titles. The book is tightly bound, with slight offsetting to the endpapers. The pages are clean and bright throughout, with no stains, marks, or tears. The dust jacket has some edge rubbing at the spine crown and a tiny chip. I've placed the dust jacket into an archival Brodart protective sleeve. The book measures 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches and includes 616 pages. . Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good+. Illus. by Arthur Shilstone. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Advise and Consent is a 1959 political novel written by Allen Drury which explores the reactions of those in and around the United States Senate to the controversial nomination of Robert Leffingwell, a former Communist Party member, to be United States Secretary of State. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1960, and was followed by A Shade of Difference in 1962 and four subsequent sequels.
