About This Item
NY, NY, U.S.A. : Random House, Incorporated, 1979. First Edition, 2nd..., 1979. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. Octavo, hardcover, near fine in lightly edgeworn pictorial dj. 239 pages. "Africa--and the Sudan, its largest nation--an impoverished land bogged in sharp political problems and a fascinating but intractable history. After a three-month visit in 1976, Hoagland returned the next winter, traveling about mostly by jeep and truck, from equatorial mountain forest to the Sahara desert, living in small Sudanese towns in the south and west of the country, with interludes in Khartoum, the capital. Outside Khartoum. The daily facts of life were hard--a diet sometimes consisting only of boiled sorghum; grim rumors of resurgent epidemic fevers; a coup attempt in the regional center of Juba; a civil war along the Ethiopian border; whole villages whose inhabitants shivered constantly because of a lack of clothing.". Hoagland brings you to the Sudan with such authenticity you don't have to see it for yourself.
