About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Praeger, Publishers, 1967. Hardcover. Good+/G+. Dust jacket shows tanning, some soiling, wear.. Black cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Off-white dust jacket with brown and black lettering, color illustrations. 26 pp + 166 BW plates. "In the illustrations of 165 weights, the book presents a representative cross-section of the forms employed. The plates reproduce the goldweights in enlargement so that the skill of the caster and the exquisite detailing of the pieces are revelaed to advantage. Margaret Webster Plass, an authority on African art and the owner of a large and outstanding collection of goldweights, has supplied a description of each illustration, as well as a commentary which treates the historical background of Ashanti society, including the Ashanti wars waged by Britain, and describes the process of goldweight manufacture." -- dj.
