Percy Scott rendered his greatest service to the British Navy in the field of naval gunnery, which differs materially from artillery practice on land. The battery commander on land can aim and fire his pieces by means of the clinometer with almost mathematical accuracy, even when the target is invisible. The gunnery officer on ship board cannot use the clinometer because his gun platform, the ship, is not steady or exactly level. These considerations and others have led to the dictum that only fools attack forts with ships. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 317 pages .
