Born in Martinique, Cesaire studied in Paris where he met Leopold Senghor, and "discovered Africa" and began his lifelong dedication to the idea of Negritude. This collection begins with his important first book, written in 1939 upon his return to the Caribbean -Cahier du Retour au Pays Natal -Notebook of a Return to the Native Land. xv, 408 pp.
