Bibliophile, book dealer, calligrapher, serial club founder, gourmet and dandy, A. J. A. Symons is now best remembered as the author of The Quest For Corvo. All of his interests are captured in manuscripts, books, letters, membership lists, photos, catalogues, rule books, and ephemera from the collection of Simon Hewett.

Symons achieved an extraordinary amount in his 41-year life. The exhibition explores the multifaceted activities of this now largely forgotten figure particularly through the clubs he formed and in which he participated. Symons co-founded The First Edition Club in 1922, a club for book collectors which he envisioned as the British counterpart to The Grolier Club of New York City.

Through his membership in the London bibliophilic dining club, Sette of Odd Volumes, Symons met Andre Simon, the celebrated oenophile. Together in 1931 they founded the Saintsbury Club, a London dining club for wine-lovers. In 1933, they set up the Wine & Food Society (now the International Wine & Food Society).
