About This Item

Oblong Folio album (ca. 28,5x37,5 cm). 30 card stock leaves (2 blank). With 65 mounted photographs (63 albumen and 2 gelatin silver prints). Fifty photos are large, ca. 21x27,5 cm (8 ¼ x 11 in) or slightly smaller. There is also a three-part panorama ca. 8,5x34 cm (3 ¼ x 13 ¼ in); the rest of the photos are from ca. 12x18 cm (4 ¾ x 7 in) to ca. 5x8 cm (2x3 in). A dozen photos captioned and/or signed, and/or numbered in negative; over fifty photos with period pencil captions in English on the mounts. Period black half morocco album with green pebbled cloth boards. Several images mildly faded, mild foxing on the mounts, one image with a tear on the lower corner neatly repaired, but overall a very good album of interesting photos.

Attractive collection of large albumen views of Italy (43), France (15), Germany (4), and Monte Carlo (3). The photos of Italy show Genoa (Acquasola esplanade), Pisa, Rome (St. Angelo Bridge, St. Peter’s Basilica and Square, Mausoleum of Pope Clement XIII, Baths of Caracalla, the Palatine Hill, the Forum, the Arch of Septimus Severus, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Via Appia Nuova, Via Appia Antica, wine carts and sellers, several photos of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures from the Capitoline Museums), Naples, Pompeii (the Street of Fortune, the House of Marco Olconio, “the latest excavated house, 1896,” wall frescos), Florence (general view, Santa Trinita bridge, Palazzo Vecchio, the courtyard of the Palace of the Podesta, the interior of the Uffizi Palace, Giotto’s Campanile, the church of Santa Maria Novella, the tomb of Giuliano de’Medici), Venice (Grand Canal and the Rialto bridge, Palazzo Ca’ d’Oro, St. Mark’s Basilica, the Palace of the Doges, the church of Santa Maria della Salute, the Bridge of Sighs, the Canal of Disputes).

The photos of France show “Nice from Mount Boron,” Marseille (a larger view of Rue Canebière signed “N.D. Phot.” and four small views), Paris (Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, la Madeleine church, Hôtel de Ville, signed “X. Phot.” or “N.D. Phot.”), “Èze - Entre les pins,” Château Royal de Blois, and a three-part “Panorama de Chateau Beaumont.” The views of Germany show Heidelberg, “Courtyard of Heidelberg Castle,” Cologne, and “the Drachenfelsfrom Roladsbogen on the Rhine.” There are also three large photos of Monte Carlo – a general view taken “from Monaco” (by Schroeder & Cie, Zürich), “terrace of Casino,” and the interior of a casino, captioned “Faites les jeux.”

Overall a nice collection of early large albumen architectural photos of Italy, France, Germany and Monte Carlo.
