Album with eight paper-weaving samples.]

by [Froebel Gifts]. Webb, Mary

  • Used
[n.p.: 1888] Dated October 1888 on front cover. . Accordion bound in buff paper self-wrappers. . 8 in. x 8 in. With eight full-page paper-weaving samples, each in two colors of paper (green, brown, pink, blue, black, white, etc.) Slight dampstaining to edges of wrappers. Contemporary ink ownership signature of a Mary Webb and date to front cover. Internally quite clean and attractive. A very good example of a fragile Froebel gift album. This is a colorful and well-executed example of Froebel gift fourteen. The techniques shown here include weaving in straight rows and columns, zigzags, and perpendicular designs, as well as attractive color-matching within the samples. The album also shows a difficulty progression from basic patterns to the more complicated designs.

London: Grant Richards, [1902[ First edition. Original color pictorial boards with cloth spine. A bit of light rubbing to extremities. Oblong quarto. With 24 color-printed engraved plates included in pagination. Toning to endpapers. Lacking rear free endpaper. A very good, clean, and bright copy of an uncommon work. Wonderful England! is a facetious and seemingly satirical exultation of British manners and culture in the Edwardian era, told in verse paired with illustrations. The verse pokes fun at the lively caricatures of model British citizens and officials: for example, a drawing of an older man in a British naval uniform eats with a spoon from jars labeled "treacle" and "golden syrup" accompanies text that reads "The first Sea-Lord performs / A most difficult feat / It is said that he tastes / All the jam for our fleet!" (p. 34).

In the original dust jacket, printed in blue (some chipping to extremities and some toning). A very good, bright copy of this work by the inventor of the foundational technology for the field of electronics. Lee de Forest (1873 – 1961) was an inventor who pioneered broadcasting technology. His dissertation at Yale, "Reflections of Electric Waves of Very High Frequencies at the Ends of Parallel Wires," may have been the earliest American dissertation based on Hertzian waves — an experimental form of what became known as wireless. Description:
Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

Adams was born to Nathaniel Dickinson Adams and Harriet (Hastings) Adams in Shutesbury, Massachusetts. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More
