About This Item
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, tipped-in color plates by Harry Rountree, published by Sully and Kleinteich, New York, 64 pp., 8" x 10". 1915 (n.d., but see Morgan Library; www.themorgan.org/printed-books/344180). Red cloth stamped in gold with color plate mounted on front cover, with paste-in color pictorial. Original dust jacket present (see below).
This volume has been a gem of our personal bookshelf, but we've decided to list it for sale for the first time. Rountree's beautiful color plates and its extreme scarcity make this an aspirational goal for Alice collectors; the condition and presence of the DJ make this book literally unique.
Overall condition of book is Very Good. Cover corners and edges are sharp, with the lightest of wear. Light foxing of interior of front and rear boards, where not enclosed by DJ. Binding is tight. All plates present and firmly in place. Interior pages are bright and clean and as-new, but for faint droplet stain on p.16. Only other sign of wear is faint moisture wicking at base of front cover (see photos). DJ is in Good condition, small torn area at base of spine, wear at corners, and widespread discoloration (see photos). DJ now in protective mylar sleeve.
- About the Illustrator: "Harry Rountree (1878-1950) was a prolific illustrator working in England around the turn of the 20th century. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, he moved to London in 1901, when he was 23 years old… His work features in publications such as The Strand Magazine, Cassell's Magazine, Pearson's, The Sketch, The Illustrated London News, Playtime, Little Folks, and many others. Rountree was one of the leading illustrators selected by Percy Bradshaw for inclusion in his The Art of the Illustrator (1917-1918). Rountree also served as a consultant at the Percy Bradshaw's Press Art School, a school teaching painting, drawing, and illustration by correspondence. The consultants gave feedback on the work submitted by the students. During the First World War, he served as a captain in the Royal Engineers." (from Wikipedia)

Synopsis
Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There , tell the story of a young girl in a fantasy world filled with peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The classic tale of literary nonsense takes the reader on an exploration of logic and absurdities. The Alice books — sometimes combined or referred to with the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland — have been translated into at least 97 languages with over a hundred different editions. The books have also been adapted numerous times into films (both live-action and cartoon), plays, and musicals.
