Rutland, Vt., Tuttle, [1946]. 162pp. Illus., frontis. Portrait. Original blue cloth with title in gilt on spine. First edition of this modern rarity. Limited to 200 copies for private distribution. Allen enlisted with the American Fur Company and came to Fort Benton in 1862 on the side wheeler "Spread Eagle." His recollections include the establishment of Fort Pease, his trip to the Black Hills in 1865, his account of the Custer Massacre, and his scouting and trail guide days. He scouted for General Nelson Miles along with the Yellowstone Kelly. Smith 8112 located only 2 copies. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Howes or Graff. On front flyleaf: "To Ray and Billy Gradner with greetings from the author Mary Allen Phinney, Seattle, Wa., 1947",

This copy also includes a tipped-in handwritten letter from the author, Mary A. Phinney, offering this copy for presentation. A crisp, clean copy to boot. Tight and Near Fine in its navy-blue cloth, with lightly-faded gilt-lettering at the spine. Octavo, 162 pgs. Also includes handsome custom-made slipcase, which is in pristine condition.
