About This Item

[N.p., possibly Grand Island, Ne, 1933. Very good.. Photographically-illustrated poster, 22 x 18 inches. Original folds, minor wear and very slight separation at a few crossfolds. A striking promotional poster for the Nebraska town of Alliance, issued during the Great Depression. Alliance is located in the northwestern corner of Nebraska, as the present poster attests: "Alliance, the livestock, potato and small grain center of Nebraska, is justly proud of its reputation as the host city of Western Nebraska. The town has also been situated along the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad line since 1888, which resulted in heightened prominence for the city (and a name change from Grand Lake to Alliance in 1891). The present poster touts Alliance as "The Center of a Vast Domain" of railroading, ranching, farming, dairying, mining," and more. The poster includes statistics related to the city, as well as information on its streets, schools, churches, amusements, airports, farmer's markets, industry, and more. The promotional text is enhanced with a hand-drawn map of parts of Nebraska and Wyoming showing Alliance's position on the railroad line, as well as three photographs picturing the Sunken Gardens in the City Park, the Alliance Municipal Swimming Pool, and the town's new $400,000 Municipal Power Plant. We could locate no other copies of this handsome promotional poster, but admit it could be hiding in larger collections of similar material related to Nebraska.
