New York: Coward-McCann Inc., 1940. 8vo size gray clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 133 lightly toned pages with black and white decorations. From preface: "This book is made up of other books and my enthusiasms. I have turned over half a library to put it together. If it makes you begin to turn over half a library for yourself, it shall have accomplished its purpose." From jacket: "(the author) has divided (this book) into 12 sections, according to the months of the year, each of which is broken down into variously sized chapters containing suggestions for reading appropriate to the particular month at hand...he has included a generous sprinkling of lively anecdotes and epigrams that will delight the mind as well as add a tonic touch to lagging conversations. In addition he gives the reader a monthly "birthday box," a selection of 10 authors, both classic and contemporary, at lease some of whose birthdays may be celebrated each month by reading from their works. There are also many reading lists, and 12 literature quizzes" to test and tease the eruditely alert mind." Jacket has several small tears on front cover, some minor chipping, small chip at bottom of jacket, and tanned area on back of jacket. We noted an inked annotation on page 13, penciled numbers on page 51 and bumped head and heel of spine.
