London: T. Fisher Unwin,, 1895. A near-fine copy of the author's first book First edition, first impression, first state of the author's first book. This copy has type missing on the last two lines of page 110. Cagle identifies this as the first state. Conrad's first book (and his first novel) is set in the Borneo jungle, about the Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer and Nina, his mixed-race daughter. In 1895 the author suggested a first printing of 1,100 copies. Later estimates include 1,000 copies (suggested by the publishers) and 2,000 copies (suggested by Wise). Octavo. Original dark green vertically ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Housed in a custom green morocco-backed folding box. Extremities slightly bumped, browning to endpapers and occasional foxing; a near-fine and crisp copy. Wise 1; Cagle A1a(1).
