About This Item

Mattituck, NY: Amereon House/Ameron Ltd., 1996. 1996 Edition, printing unstated. NEAR FINE in NEAR FINE dust jacket. AUTHOR INSCRIBED on the title page, in black ink, "For Pete and Susie with best wishes. Harry Havemeyer." A crisp, clean, otherwise unmarked copy. Pages crisp and unmarked - faint foxing to top page edge, otherwise pages are fine, firmly bound in a light blue leatherette hardcover, title gilt-stamped on front and spine. Small bumps to top outside corner tips, otherwise cover is fine. Binding and hinges firm and straight. Pictorial jacket is clean and complete; very slight shelf rub but no soiling or toning; no scuffs, tears, chips or creases. A well-written and informative history of Long Island's Great South Bay (stretching from approximately West Islip to Oakdale, east of Islip) from the 1840s when affluent New Yorkers, attracted by the cool Atlantic breezes, began building summer homes along the coast, through to the breaking up of the big estates in the mid-twentieth century. Generously illustrated with 56 pages of archival photos plus illustrated title pages. (Many of the photos are printed rather on the "light, side", apparently purposely as the type next to art is always dark.) Map endpapers Bibliography and Index included. 5-3/4 x 8-3/4". xiv + 493 text pages plus photos.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine.
