About This Item
Heinemann, London., 1898. First edition. The ''Library Edition'' with the tipped-in colour lithographic title-page and twenty-six plates printed on laid paper and bound in full pictorial oatmeal cloth, all edges gilt. Folio. The Alphabet was also issued in two other versions: a de luxe edition of about 50 copies printed from the blocks and coloured by hand; a popular edition with the plates printed on cartridge paper and bound in cloth-backed boards. This is the first of the five picture books that Nicholson published with Heinemann. The first image, ''A was an Artist'', is a self portrait, while the second, ''B for Beggar'', is a portrait of James Pryde with whom Nicholson developed a striking poster style under the name the Beggarstaff Brothers. Two of the plates differ from those in the de luxe edition, as it was thought that ''E is for Executioner'' and ''T is for Toper'' might not be suitable for younger eyes; here they have become ''E is for Earl'' and ''T for Trumpeter''.Covers rubbed at the corners. Spine tanned and scuffed, heavily in places. Very good. The plates are fine.
