About This Item

U S A: Rutgers University Press. Near Fine/Good. 1970. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0813506220 Harback Hardback. Very slight foxing to edge. Very slight wear to D/J. Price clipped to D/J. The purpose of this book is twofold: to recall the romance of Amadis de Gaule from its literary limbo and to examine the influence of the French version on Elizabethan literature. The author provides the furst full-length study to treat either the whole of Amadis de Gaule or its literary impact in Elizabethan England. he devotes a generous portion of the book to the literary qualities, motifs, and sources of the romance, for althought this extraordinary text forms a natural bridge between late medieval and early Renaissance literary traditions, little scholarly attention has given to its signficance in literary history. Mr. O'Connor makes an important and original contribution not only to comparative Renaissance studies but also to our understanding of one of the significant works of the early Renaissance - a work that went through many editions but that was read so avidly over such a long period of time that very few libraries in the world possess a complete set of the books of Amadis in any language. Illustrations. 308 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) .
