About This Item
VG-/VG-. Hardcover with dust jacket. Slightly bumped corners on book covers, and upper corner of most pages very slightly bent; minor tears and creases to jacket, now in a mylar protector. Otherwise a tight, clean copy. ~~~ Bibliography, index, 218 pages. ~~~ On March 4, 1801, Thomas Jefferson walked from Conrad and McMunn's boardinghouse to the unfinished Capitol buildig to be inaugurated as the third president of the United States. Thus was founded the "Virginia Dynasty"-- in which, for twenty-four consecutive years, the presidency was held, in turn, by three eminent natives of the state of Virginia. The men of the Virginia Dynasty- Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, were to provide the leadership for the country through an era of remarkable change and growth. What had been a small nation on the Eastern seaboard at the start of the century was, by the end of the period, well on its way to conquering the better part of a continent. --- The nation's growth in size and population was mirrored in other areas; industry, transportation and technology. In domestic and foreign affairs it was a disturbing time; the 1800 election crisis, the growing debate over slavery, the War of 1812 and the statement of the Monroe Doctrine were but a few of the areas of concern. And in art, literature, music, science, law and all other aspects of life it was a time of charting a new path, of finding an American way.
