About This Item

New York: The Fairfax Press, 1985. First Printing thus [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good. [10]m 145, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Index. DJ worn and chipped. Sir Winston Spencer-Churchill (30 November 1874 ? 24 January 1965) was a British politician, army officer, and writer. He was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, when he led Britain to victory in the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill oversaw British involvement in the Allied war effort against Germany and the Axis powers, resulting in victory in 1945. His wartime leadership was widely praised. He was praised as a social reformer and writer, among his many awards was the Nobel Prize in Literature. Two of his most famous works, were his six-volume memoir The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples; a four-volume history covering the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain to the beginning of the First World War. Some of Churchill's speeches were also published. Blood, Sweat and Tears was included in Life Magazine's list of the 100 outstanding books of 1924?1944. THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR taken from Volume IV of Churchill's acclaimed A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH- SPEAKING PEOPLES, brings us up to the turn of the century. But Churchill's superb account of the American Civil War stands on its own. Churchill's understanding of the Civil War rivals that of our American scholars. From the first shot fired on Ft. Sumter to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Churchill paints a picture of the time in his own elegant style and with his own unique perspective. This book places United States history in perspective and will answer your questions without a contrived agenda, but based on undeniable historical facts. And, no, slavery was not the cause.
