The American costume, or, Woman's right to good health by Austin, Harriet N - 1872

Dansville, NY: Austin, Jackson & Co, 1872. Pamphlet. 24p. plus five pages of advertisements, booklet with lightly worn wraps, some corners creased. Issued in several versions over the years, with changes to the ads. Rear cover depicts "Our Home on the Hillside," where Austin promoted the Water Cure. Austin, a hydrotherapist, promoted the reform of women's clothing, which she argued was too limiting to allow healthy free movement and activity. The main features of her proposed dress were a knee-length tunic over loose pants.
