Inscribed and signed by Counts to the right-wing journalist Ralph de Toledano. Label pasted to front wrap reads "Ladies and Gentlemen! Just step right through this looking glass and see the militarized, superstition-bound, and poverty stricken American school and the racists, cosmopolitans, imperialists, learned churls, bond servants, frantic expansionists, war instigators, and hardened bison of American education. Only five rubles!" Counts was a progressive educator and President of the American Federation of Teachers from 1939 to 1942. He initially admired the Soviet Union's education system, but turned against it after the show trials of the later '30s and later fought to keep Communists out of the AFT.
