America's first literary magazine, including early printings of the Federalist Papers and the Constitution in No.s 3, 5 and 6. Contributors include: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Paine, James Bowdoin, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin West, Jeremy Belknap, Ezra Stiles, Noah Webster, H.M. Brackenridge, Joel Barlow, Timothy Dwight, Benjamin Rush, Joel Dickinson, and Tench Coxe. American Museum included debates surrounding the Constitution, as well as internal improvements, industry, agriculture, and the overall state of the nation. The Constitution in this volume is one of the first printings, and the first six Federalist Papers appear in No.s 5 and 6. It became a source for information about Federal activities as Carey printed reports from cabinet departments, proceedings of Congress, state constitutions, treaties with foreign nations, and foreign intelligence. Lacking boards; spine cracked and binding loose (see image). Lacking list of subscribers and initial Title (pagination begins at [13]) to issue one. Last (#6) issue lacks last pages of cumulative index (stops at Q). 587, 20 pages. 5 x 8 inches.
