About This Item

This is a scarce detective fiction novel, "An American Penman - From the Diary of Inspector Byrnes" by JULIAN HAWTHORNE (son of famed author Nathaniel Hawthorne). 1887 1st edition; Cassell & Company; New York. First American edition in original publisher's softcover/paperback format. The title character "Inspector Byrnes" was strongly based on Hawthorne's friend and real-life detective Thomas F. Byrnes. There are eight pages of advertisements at the back, two pages of advertisements at the front, and advertisements on the back cover and inside back cover.

Condition:
Light soiling and staining to the covers and spine. Bits of paper have chipped away at the cover corners, the top and bottom edges of the spine, and at the left edge of the back cover - please see the photos. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and mostly clean with only some light soiling to the 1st page, a small stain at the upper-outer corner of the title page through page 7 and a small tear at the upper-outer corner of a few pages at the back. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
