London: Virtue & Co., City Road and Ivy Lane, 1855. Hardcover. Very Good. London, Virtue & Co., City Road and Ivy Lane, [circa 1855]/ 1840. Quarto, two volumes bound as one (as issued), [vi], 140, iv, 106 pages plus 2 engraved pictorial title pages, a full-page map of the 'North Eastern Part of the United States', and 117 full-page engravings (all but one with its original tissue-guard). The plates are 'From drawings by W.H. Bartlett. Engraved in the first style of the art, by R. Wallis, J. Cousen, Willmore, Brandard, Adlard, Richardson, &c.'. Original half dark green morocco and green cloth, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt in compartments, all edges gilt; leather a little scuffed and sunned, with a little wear to the corner tips; cloth scuffed (more so at the rear); front inner hinge cracked but very firm; three tissue-guards a little chipped and creased; occasional foxing and minimal signs of use; overall, an excellent copy. The early inkstamp of 'J.R. Hamilton | Book Importer | Sydney' is on the front pastedown.
