About This Item

New York: New York University Press, 1957. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover, gray cloth in price-clipped dust-jacket. Notes, Bibliography, Index. First edition. The first American to play Hamlet on the British stage, John Howard Payne was also suitor to Mary Shelley, a playwright of some renown and impassioned advocate for justice for the Cherokee Indians. No previous ownership marks. Book shows light foxing to margins of title-page and frontis, as well as some dust-spotting to top edge and fore-edge. Dust-jacket shows no tears or chips and is slightly dusty with age. A very good copy in a good dust-jacket. .
