Paris: Jaillot, 1713. Fourth issue. . Engraved map, 23 x 31 inches. Contemporary colour in outline, cartouche not coloured. Uncommon 1713 edition of Jaillot's large-format map of North America based upon Sanson's landmark map of 1656, showing California as an Island. First published in 1695, this is the 4th issue of 1713, which incorporates new information from De L'Isle and De Fer, but still depicts California as an island. The fifth issue, published in 1719, shows California re-attached to the mainland; this is a fresh and attractive copy of the scarce 1713 issue, still showing California as an island. Burden: The Mapping of North America II: 709 (the 5th state).
