Embossed blue-grey linen boards with heraldic arms/NF w/light edge & corner tip rubs. Trace opening to front hinge; structurally sound. A novel by California author Gertrude [Franklin] Atherton (1857 - 1948) whose many novels include a series depicting life in her native state from Spanish times to the present. This work is set in the year 1904, ending w/the day fire consumed San Francisco, as the heroine watches the Fairmont, a last building to catch fire, send up "a steady square volume of curling white smoke" even while its windows still glistened "like plates of brass". Fine copy.
