Original light green cloth with gilt lettering and publisher's device on covers, gilt lettering and ruling on spines. Publisher's device on title page. Printed errata leaf laid into both volumes. "... this book aims to provide a resumé of scattered information... concerned with the archaeology of the region. It is thus meant in the first instance to be a practical manual-a field reference book." (Introduction). The set covers the geographical and the socio-historical background, the history and elements of building in South Syria and Palestine, and a chapter with foreign connections in Egypt, Aegean, Anatolia and North Syria, Mesopotamia and Persia. The set is illustrated with 367 illustrations in volume two. Contains list of illustrations and abbreviations as well as index in volume one. Laid in 4 page printed illustrated advertisement for these volumes, printed in blue, and subscription letter from Brill. Very light wear along edges of binding and some pencil underling and notes in margins of the introduction. Volume one with pages lightly wavy from water exposure at bottom of first fifty pages.
