About This Item

New York:: Dutton,, 1981.. Hardcover first edition -. Near fine in near fine dust jacket (some spotting to edges of textblock.). First printing. An exploration of America's political heritage in this story of loyalty, revenge, betrayal, and, ultimately, forgiveness - the term 'Angel of Light' was used by Thoreau for John Brown, who was hanged for his anti-slavery activities. 434 pp.

Synopsis

Joyce Carol Oates's Angel of Light is about the Halleck family in Washington in 1980.  The father, Maurice, is found dead from an apparent suicide - but his children, Kirsten and Owen are certain that it was their mother and her new lover that did him in. This free-form book sometimes uses stream of consciousness and jumpy timelines to increase the sense of mystery and confusion as Kirsten and Owen exact any revenge they can.
