About This Item
London: Royal National Theatre and Nick Hern Books, (1992)., (1992).. Very good. FIRST BRITISH EDITION OF ANGELS IN AMERICA INSCRIBED BY TONY KUSHNER - Octavo, 7-7/8 inches high by 5 inches wide. Softcover, bound in pictorial wrappers illustrated by Michael Mayhew. [16] & 90 pages. The edges of the book are slightly foxed. Very good.
First British Edition of Part One published in conjunction with the British Premiere of the play. The book was published prior to the world premiere of Part Two: Perestroika. A statement in the book reads: "Tony Kushner is currently developing Part Two: Perestroika with the Eureka Theatre company and the Mark Taper Forum. Angels in America Parts One and Two will receive its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in the 1992-3 season."
The British premiere of Part One took place in a Royal National Theatre Production at The Cottesloe Theatre on January 23, 1992. Kushner's warm inscription is dated within the first week of the production: "1/29/92 To...w/ much love & admiration - Tony".
Included with the book is the 8-page original program for the British Premiere. The 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide program was designed by Michael Mayhew and Shima Hyde with a cover illustration by Lo Cole. An introduction by Tony Kushner is included in which he writes: "What was originally intended to be one play has grown into two, or rather into one very long play, the first half of which, Millennium Approaches, may be viewed independently. I have recently completed the second half, Perestroika, which continues the stories of the characters from Millennium. Since the writing was funded by a Federal grant, I felt the play ought to have a National dimension, and as it was a considerable sum, I wanted to give the taxpayers their money's worth."
