About This Item

Singapore Oxford New York: Oxford University Press, 1987. First Oxford Paperback Edition . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2. 157 Pages Indexed. Originally published in 1958 this is the 1987 paperback edition. Previous owner's name label on front endpaper along with a date and penciled price. Pasted to the front endpapers are two news articles regarding the Khmer Rouge and the imprisonment of an American woman dated 1994. Although the ruins at Angkor are famous throughout the world, the majority of the books about them are in French. This was one of the first to appear in English. Without pretending to be a work of historical scholarship it gives an account of the Khmers who built Angkor a thousand years ago, and vividly describes the great ruins in their wonderful jungle setting. One chapter of it is in effect a guide to all the most important buildings in Angkor. In the course of his duties as Commissioner-General for South-East Asia, the late Sir Malcolm MacDonald made frequent visits to Cambodia, and this book also contains an appraisal of Prince Sihanouk and of the part he and his subjects played in international affairs. First published in 1958 Angkor, now re-titled Angkor and the Khmers, with its fine photographs, is worthy of reissue for its account of a remarkable architectural achievement which is no longer accessible to the modern-day traveller. There is an illustration section at the end of the book with 111 Black and white photographs on un-numbered pages. Contents in Five chapters: The King of the Khmers, The History of the Khmers, The Life of the Khmers, The Ruins of the Khmers, and The Modern Khmers. Illustrated with a frontispiece photo of Her Royal Highness Princess Buppha Dhevi a map on page 12.
