Paris: Hachette. 1862. First Edition. Hardcover. Bound in early/period quarter red morocco and marbled boards, marbled endpapers, top page edges gilt. pp 680. Numerous engraved plates and in-text illustrations, folding map at rear. Sabin 5134. Profusely and handsomely illustrated with engravings after sketches by the author, a successful French genre painter of the time. His artistic career in a lull, François-Auguste Biard (1799-1882) traveled to Brazil in 1858 and spent two years living and traveling in Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Amazonia, and elsewhere. He was one of the very first European artists of note to spend time with and depict the indigenous population of the rain forest and the interior. Light shelf wear to lower edges of boards, spine faintly sunned, else fine, contents exceptionally clean and bright, free of foxing, firmly bound. A very nice copy. 3 kg parcel; Thick octavo .
