Antverpiae: Andreae Frisi, 1668. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Tempesta, Antonio. 12mo. Full vellum. Spine lettered. [24] 576 p.p., plus [48] p.p. index. Engraved half-title page and engraved vignette on title-page. Features [44] engravings, illustrating numerous medieval torture methods and devices. Atonio Gallonio [1556-1605] was a Roman priest in the Congregation of the Oratory. Interested in the Martyrs, Gallonio studied the various methods of torture they endured, which resulted in a book about the subject, first appearing in Italy in 1591. Bookplate of Hal Hitchcok to front pastedown. Soiling to covers. Small early doodle on title-page. Slight bumping at corners. Small bumps on spine. Rubbing to outer edges. Light damp stains to head and foot of first few leaves. Interior clean and crisp. Bright. A near fine copy.
