[9.25x6.25in]; xiii, 254 pp. [1], photographic image by Herbert Ponting of sailing ship [Terra Nova, Scott's 1911-12 expedition] in ice field on title page, 14 plates with photographs, 12 maps; Dark blue cloth covers with gilt lettering and triton image on spine with title on black field with gilt borders, top edge blue dye, map of Antarctic regions with notation of expeditions on front and rear endpapers; Dark blue dust jacket with yellow-green outlined and white letters on front and spine, ocean illustration of iceberg and sailing ship on front and spine, advertisements in blue lettering on rear; Minor shelf wear to all top and bottom edges, bottom corners bumped, some slight darkening of text edges; Some shelf wear and small chips to all dust jacket edges and top of spine, spine and rear cover darken with age. [Rosove 1236, Spence 883]. Russell Owen [1889-1952] was a journalist and writer interested in adventure and exploration. He covered the air race to the North Pole with Amundsen and was part of Byrd's Little America I Antarctic expedition of 1928-30, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the onsite reporting of the expedition. He also wrote a book about the expedition in 1934, "South of the Sun".
This book is a good overview of Antarctic exploration from the late 1700's to early 1900's with Cook, Palmer, Wilkes to the Golden or "Heroic" Age of Antarctic exploration with European and British explorers.
