New York: Macmillan, 1905. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. The account of the Swedish Polar expedition of 1901-4 which wintered at Snow Hill Island on the east side of Antarctic Peninsula. The ship "Antarctica", operating independently, was crushed in the ice and the crew wintered at Paulet Island. With a fine inscription from a fascinated reader who thought this "most dramatically interesting of all stories of Arctic exploration"; I would have liked to hear the original inscriber's take on Shackleton's "South" written some 14 years later..... Royal 8vo, xviii, 680pp. Frontispiece & color fold-out maps, 4 col. plates, and b&w maps and illustrations and photos in text. Original green cloth, gilt title with a penguin motif in the center. A very bright and clean copy that has a small crack in the upper and lower front hinge. Spence 861.
