BRIGHTON: TEREDO BOOKS, 1977 Green Cloth Boards with gilt titles to spine and gilt blocked seascape to upper board. 290 x 230 mm approx. xxviii + 260 pp. Frontis + 235 other illustrations of which 112 in colour. Born in Regensburg in 1882 and orphaned soon after he became an American citizen and after studying art in Paris returned to the US where after working as an illustrator; took to working as a marine artist. He was appointed artist-laureate by the US Coast Guard during WWII whereupon he obtained fame. With a mystical affinity with the very run of the sea and the way of a ship his works portray a realism almost unique, this together with his ability to delineate men's emotions stands him above his peers.
