About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1948. First US edition in later state dust jacket (not gold foil). Hardcover. Very good ++. 205 pp. Octavo. [21 cm]. Navy cloth over boards with author's initials stamped in light blue ink on front board and gilt and blue striped stamped decortation and title stamped on spine. Deckled edges. Subtle sunning to pages. Dust jacket is in very good condition; it is price clipped and scuffed at extremities. Small piece of tape to the reverse. Known for its interesting plot structure divided into a frame narrative: readers are introduced to two writers: a novelist and screenwriter. Readers are then immersed in the fictional work they resurrect together, which is set in a dystopic universe Huxley is famous for painting. Using a setting after mass nuclear destruction and "World War Three", a post apolocalyptic society emerges which engages in annual orgies and ritualistic murder of babies with cancerous effects from radiation. Its iconic vignettes of baboons performing 20th century human daily tasks add an extra layer of haunting thrill.

Synopsis

Ape and Essence is a novel by Aldous Huxley, published by Chatto & Windus in the UK and Harper & Brothers in the US. It is set in a dystopia, similar to that in Brave New World, Huxley's more famous work. It is largely a satire of the rise of large-scale warfare and warmongering in the 20th century, and presents a pessimistic view of the politics of mutually assured destruction.
