They were important gathering places that forged an important place in the social life of nearly every town in Queensland and New South Wales. In this volume arranged marriages, child labour, wartime anecdotes and the escapades of drunks and SP bookies emerge as hitherto untold, or under-represented aspects of Australian culture. Also reveals a link between the tiny Kytherian village of Fratsia and the regional city of Ipswich where more than a dozen Greek cafes operated during the 40s and 50s..
