About This Item

Paris: C. Motteroz (Paris), for Isidore Liseux, 1879     ¶ BEST EDITION, only issue, of this celebrated trove of sixteenth-century manners and customs, compiled ostensibly to buttress the credibility of Herodotus but with a mind as well to satirizing modern institutions, not least the Roman Catholic Church. "Voici enfin une édition digne du grand libre-penseur du XVIe siècle: nous aimons à croire qu'elle sera considérée par tour les lettrés délicats comme l' ÉDITION DÉFINITIVE." (Brunet / Deschamps.)  Chapter 13, we notice, is devoted to sodomy and le 'péché contre nature', with remarks as well on transvestites and 'tribades' (i.178): The latter is said to be the earliest occurrence of the word tribade in French, preceding its appearance in English by some thirty-five years. A lovely set.   ||| Collation: Two volumes in 4s (196 × 128 mm), paginated [i-v] vi-xlviii [1-3] 4-431 [432], [1-5] 6-505 [506-508], including the colophon-leaf at end. Titles printed in red and black, fine wood-engraved initials, wood-engraved and typographical head- and tailpieces throughout.  Illustration: One type-facsimile.  Binding: Fine old three-quarter red morocco gilt extra, marbled sides, marbled endpapers, 1 + 1 wove flyleaves, top-edges gilt, others untrimmed, by Vauterin(?), preserving the original printed VELLUM WRAPPERS bound in.  Condition: Very good, extremities slightly worn, the vellum wrappers somewhat foxed.  References: Brunet / Deschamps (1878-80) ii 1021-23 qv; OCLC 04275530..  Provenance: Beatrice Reiter Leval (1911-2004), of New York, picture-collector (Christie's New York, 4-5 May 2005, nos. 8-14 &c).   ||| For further details please contact Jay Dillon  Rare Books + Manuscripts, as below.  Pour plus de précisions, veuillez contacter Jay Dillon  Rare Books + Manuscripts, comme ci-dessous..

About Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts

Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts is a private, research-intensive rare-book dealer of forty years' experience in and around New York, specialized in exceptional books, manuscripts, and cultural property. Jay Dillon has been responsible for selling or appraising more than $100 million worth of books and manuscripts spanning some three thousand years. In 1989 Jay Dillon was the editor and principal author of a richly annotated catalogue that was hailed in the English press as one of the ten best books -- of any kind -- published that year. In 1994 he was invited to narrate the Discovery Channel program on the history of monopoly; and four years later he was consulted by the Zapruder family in connection with their famous film of the assassination of President Kennedy -- which, as it turned out, Mr Dillon valued more accurately than any other appraiser. The firm maintains a wide and productive network of relationships both among private collectors and in the trade; and we are currently engaged in building a number of outstanding private collections for our clients. Books and manuscripts offered to the public are mainly duplicates from our clients' libraries, or otherwise surplus to their needs. Our appraisal services include formal appraisals for insurance, estate-settlement, and tax purposes. For details please contact Dillonbook@AOL.com.
