Burton's translation was first published in 1885, and this edition contains Notes by Lane, Payne, Torres and Burton in the rear, after the 674 pages of Tales. This beautiful edition features a full black leather binding with four raised spine bands and five decorated compartments. The cover and spine decorations are in 22 kt gold and all edges are gilt. Printed on archival acid-free paper with smyth sewing. The end papers are black silk moire, and there is also a yellow silk ribbon bookmark. There are no owner bookplates or owner names in the book, nor are there any other markings. It is doubtful if it was ever read. It would make a wonderful addition to any library, and can also be presented to a special person as a gift. Black cloth with gilt lettered spines and front boards. Glassine present but yellowed and chipped at spine ends. Light foxing to the fore-edges. One slipcase with a hard bump to one corner, but overall a very good, clean set. This set numbered 401 of 1500. Illustrated in color throughout.

Almost no wear to the covers; the gold decorations are bright, fresh, and unrubbed which is quite the exception for this set. The slip cases have some minor wear at their corners. Burton's definitive translation of 65 of the 1001 stories told by Scheherazade the Sultaness to divert Shahryar the Sultan from executing her as he had previously done to hundreds of his other wives.
