Based on the doctrines of architecture formulated by the French Academy during the eighteenth century, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts system of instruction stressed drawing as the primary means of visualizing architectural form. The authors examine Beaux-Atrs concepts of theory and practice, assess major work by each of the school's main factions; covers the school's complex political and administrative history; the consequences for modern architecture of its antihistorical bias; the influence of model making and drawing on the development of architectural concepts; etc. 527 pgs. 401 Illustrations, 24 in color with 12 gatefolds.
